NYCAN releases analysis on National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results; proficiency rates down in all subject areas
New York, NY— NYCAN: The State Campaign for Achievement Now released analysis of NY’s NAEP test results yesterday. Also known as the Nation’s Report Card, NAEP tests offer a trusted, consistent and objective measure of student achievement that allows for apples to apples comparisons of proficiency across the country.
Overall, NY students’ proficiency rates are slipping, with achievement gaps widening rather than shrinking for most student groups. Across all subjects, overall proficiency rates are at or below 40 percent, and in only the 30s for eighth grade math and reading.
Other key findings include:
- Students are doing worse in New York than they were two years ago – the percentage of students scoring at least proficient is lower.
- Notably, more Asian students are doing worse across all four proficiency categories, including an 11 percentage point drop in 4th grade math.
- Proficiency gaps are still far too wide, including a 33 percentage point gap between white and black students in 4th grade math ( 47 percent vs. 14 percent).
- But, there are some bright spots.
- More white and black students are doing better in 4th grade reading.
- More Hispanic and low-income students are doing better in 8th grade math and reading.
“The NAEP results show us we need to work harder and faster,” says NYCAN executive director Derrell Bradford. “While privileged parents and status quo leaders try to smash the effort to improve education in New York, our kids are telling us they need more help—all help—now.”
