If last year’s session was the equivalent of Daenerys Targaryen and her dragons taking on the lords of the seven kingdoms, this year’s was the province of the Master of Whisperers. Although intrigue and anti-charter sentiment were inescapable, we saw positive change for kids, too:

  • An increase in funding for charter schools,
  • A historic change that makes the 2014 funding arrangement for charter schools permanent,
  • Language that allows charter authorizers to provide more flexible rules around teacher hiring,
  • And a one-year mayoral control extension.

NYCAN has great partners, like StudentsFirstNY, Success Academy, Familes for Excellent Schools, High Achievement New York, and many others, who lead the daily charge in change. It’s a privilege to work alongside them in this effort to make high-quality education for every NY student a priority this year—and a reality every year.

But the work is also unfinished. The Education Tax Credit, which we support strongly, remains unresolved, as do significant issues around standards and assessments. We promise to keep fighting not because we have to, but because we need to.
